I've got a really nasty virus on my home computer. I don't know how long it will take to clear. Hopefully, I'll be back Saturday evening . . . I hope.

It was really weird. I downloaded Spybot Search & Destroy and it began to search. While it was doing so, my little program "new programs" notice came up and there was Antispywarmaster. I clicked on it and opened up "uninstall", clicked it and the damned thing disappeared. I still have some annoying popups so I'll need to upgrade my antipoput programs but none of the stupid Antispywaremaster screens have shown up in the last hour. They were coming up every minute. I feel so empowered . . .

For a while, I'm operating off a laptop. My old hard drive is so infected that they're installing a new one. Oooo . . . this isn't turning out to be cheap!

A reformat will fix all of that. Unfortunately, that wipes everything off it.
Next time, you should boot into Safe Mods (F8 while computer is starting), and then run every scan you possibly can. I recommend Nod32 and Spybot S+d. |

We discussed that but there are too many files on the old drive that we want/need. So it's fire up the new one, install ESET virus and spyware killer then turn the old drive into a external, download the specific files we're keeping, reformat the old drive and use it as additional storage. PITA!

Thanx for all the good wishes, guys. I am back up and running, fully secure with the most powerful anti-everything software in North America, Eset! Expensive? Yeah. Bit of a pain to install? A bit. Well reviewed? Man! It's a safe feeling, I'll be havin' now. How about a beer?

It wasn't a virus, guys, it was Adware and Fake Antispyware. Those infect everything.

Sorry, not this one. Linux just does it for me. Never a thought about those nasty buggers for years and years. All happy happy, and just works™. My flavour is ubuntu, free, easy, and based on debian. Can't ask for more.

I keep hearing really good things about linux. How hard is it for the commoner to use?

I have given a copy of ubuntu to many computer illiterates who are still happy users, so it can't be too hard. And there's lot's of help and support from other users, for the FAQs and the not-so-FAQs, too.
From my professional view I find the concepts used in some of the user interfaces extremy smart and (at least mostly) intuitive. You can just give it a risk-free go, too. Download the current ubuntu CD, toast it and let Your PC run from that CD, it will start a full-fledged ubuntu linux without touching the PCs harddrive, so when You remove the CD, it will never remember what happened.
