Exclamation the Great Barrier Reef's Eco Friendly Floating Hotel...

Quote:
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has given approval for the development of Reefworld, the world’s first fully eco-friendly floating hotel. It is to be designed by the British architect Richard Hywel Evans who is known for his revolutionary designs...

I would like to know what every one thinks about this. its a really contraversal subject and although i live no where near where it is taking place i sit strongly against the idea. how would you like to see a huge man made building floating around the ocean while you are out there trying to get away from the world. they say it is eco friendly but we all know every thing has an effect on the ocean. this will be no exception.

Re: the Great Barrier Reef's Eco Friendly Floating Hotel...

What are these people thinkning? How could it be eco-friendly? The construction and/ transport of it alone will cause huge amounts of pollution and harm to the reefs. Floating? Its still going to have to be secured. How are they going to put pilings or moorings down w/out harming the reef. How are they going to get people there? Sounds like its going to add alot more boat traffic/noise pollution. What happens when a sewage line breaks?

This is also something that will probably only be affordable for the top 10% of the worlds population. How would they get the permits to do this?

The same way the Gold Coast (Same state) gets developed too close to shorelines etc, by paying the officials enough to agree it's a good idea.

it will generate its own heat and power using turbines, solar panels and underwater trickle-charge generators.
this is how they are powering it, so they have ideal conservation factors but come on, go put the thing in the middle of the ocean not on our reef. it would have minimal effects out in a position that dosent have such a fragile ecosystem....

HERE is another link i found

True but those turbines and generators produce alot of noise, still take grease and oil (therefore increasing the risk of leaks or spillage) They still need to be secured to the bottom of the ocean. Im all for green energy, but place it somewhere (like what you said above) where it wont have an effect on such a fragile ecosystem!

Why dont they put this thing somewhere more suitable... like in outer space! Oh wait, they are already trying that.

I agree, if they don’t secure something of that size, with the first large natural pressure it could be thrown into the reef, imagen what something of that size would do to the reef! not to mention the after affects of such a creation, I and other refrain from even using PVC and other plastics in the water for fear of it releasing petroleum produce and hurting our oceans, and here they are about to put a *#@&king building in the ocean!!!
I don’t pretend to understand politics but COME ON. This is out of hand; it should have never even been considered yet alone approved!

Re: the Great Barrier Reef's Eco Friendly Floating Hotel...

ok one thing you all seemed to miss, this hotel, regardless of its oil leaks and so forth will also generate shade. now if my understanding is correct, coral polyps need sunlight to grow...

also, to play devil's advocate for a minute: it supposedly will also host a lab for studying reef growth and development

Exclamation Re: the Great Barrier Reef's Eco Friendly Floating Hotel...

Yes, it has a lab for coral research... if you ask me it was a ploy to get the hotel passed with the feds. my life’s dream has been to be a marine biologist and although I am only 18 I have studied everything I can get my hands on trying to learn more to feed my lust for ocean knowledge and I can tell you now that a research center doesn’t have an underwater spa... its all a ploy! this center will have some low level grads going over the basics of reef research (things that are commonly known) to us and any one who cares about the ocean. It’s just a way for the richer 5-10% to act like they care (some really do) and a way to trick the feds into allowing such an atrocity.

I agree six. It's a ploy! They should not be allowed to do this. It's sad, really.

This is nothing more than a ploy, and if there is anything more that will come with it, it will be a stupid reason to justify getting grants to help build this rediculous project!
