what about the weighting for buyancy?

Maybe a stupid question but..

I just don't get the whole weighting stuff...
I read the whole beginner site, the book of pelizzari but..:

How do you know how much weight u need for a certain depth? how do you calculate this? what are the positive aspects of this? is it bad to dive without weight? Are there sideaffects if you dive with or without weights?

I never did a serious CWT.. just a 6-7 meters deep CWNF when i was younger..

Just really beginner questions, but it has to do with CWT so i'll post it here..
( Mods.. if it's better in the beginner section, i'll post it there)

Thanks in advance you guys..

peace.. DIONI

Re: what about weighting for buyancy

There are many variables. I am 6' 225lb with a thick one piece wetsuit. I use 24lbs to be neutrally buoyant at 30' in cold 46-52F saltwater. I tend to work at 30' and only go to about 40'. If I was working at 20', I would need more weight. I did not calculate it. I got in the water and tested it. I would use less weight for going deeper than 40'.

Re: what about weighting for buyancy

Let us know your weight, build, wetsuit thickness, and height. We can then give you an ESTIMATE that should get you comfortable in the water, and you will have to adjust from there. A good general rule is NEUTRAL at half your desired depth.

Let us know that information, and we should be able to point you in the right direction

Re: what about weighting for buyancy

thank you guys!!!
well, i'm a ex-weighlifter, so i have a really big body :P

i'm 1.83 m ( 6' ) and i weight 97 kilograms ( 214 pounds ). Since i did weightlifting before i have heavy muscles so i tend do sink pretty fast. I am not gonna use a wetsuit, since i don't have one. The waters where ill dive this summer are really warm.

I am a beginner so my top this summer wil be 12-15 meters ( based on the fact that i have a 75 meter dynamic )

how much weight should i take?

thanks a LOT guys.. i just love this form...

Re: what about weighting for buoyancy

looking at your size and where you live I'll imagine your using a 7mm suit. Try 8 kilos to start. if you find it very hard to break the surface, or you are still heading up at 8m or so, put on 2K more. I would guess you'll need aprox 10K, but start light.

EDIT: sorry, missed a bit of info in your post. if you are not using a suit and you have a "dense" body as you say you should not use any weight to start. Then build up 1Kg at a time. No suit dives are very sensitive to lung volume also. If you find it very hard to break surface w/o weight try a 80% inhale instead of max. That should feel nice. Be careful and have a buddy watching!

Re: what about weighting for buoyancy

I've got a small, lean build, body fat is probably under 8%, and I've never felt a need to be weighted without a wetsuit on. I am 5'9" 153 lbs for reference.

Have fun, be safe!
