Re: Hyperventalating

Hi Divedeep, welcome to DB.

Use the search function and a ton of stuff will come up. Read a reasonable amount of it and all will be clear. In short, lots of HV in a 6 ft pool combined with a long breathhold is probably more dangerous than most any other place.

Re: Hyperventalating

Well, Connor is right that hyperventilating in any depth is a rather deadly technique. It does not really matter whether you black out in just 1 feet of water or 60 feet down. In both cases you will likely die, unless there is someone who will rescue you. And a blackout is indeed much more likely after a hyperventilation than without it. Many blackouts actually happen after surfacing, where you then sink back underwater.

Now the depth, respectively the depresurizing effect during the ascent, amplifies the risk of hyperventilation, so there is indeed an additional risk factor increasing with the depth, but it in no way means that you won't blackout if you hyperventilate before a shallow dive.

DiveDeeper, Where are you from?
I suggest finding a diving buddy. Preferably with some experience, but otherwise, someone who is as eager to learn as you are and read read read before you try. It can be very dangerous if your not doing things right. There are so many different things to take into account. Including but not limited to. Blood PH, your diet, experience, knowing whats going on in your body when you do different things, dangers of hyperventilation, blackout, samba, going too far...past the point of no return and realizing its too late........just to name a few... Im not trying to scare you, but I do suggest you get very educated and always remember to be safe and never go wet without someone there to save your life if need be.
Best of luck and I hope your reading up as much as you are posting
Your buddy,
-Brian

Re: Hyperventalating

Are you sure that they they really-really know what to do during black-out? Is it your assessment or someone else? You wrote that they are not very experienced, didn't you?Trying dangerous technics and imposing responsibility on someone with little experience is not the best combination, I believe.
for dry hyperventilation use helmet, kapa and knee pads if you are not lying

Re: Hyperventalating

Mike, you have come to a good place to start. You are very lucky being in FL because FIT - freediving, monofin, breath hold, spearfishing, snorkeling and PFI are close by, two great course alternatives to get you off to quick and safe start in freedving
