I would'nt advise going after a fish with a knife..Too easy to cut yourself. If you are in shark infested waters that might mean double the trouble then. Get yourself a polespear or a speargun and go after fish with that. There are rules regarding spearfishing in all U.S. states and they vary greatly state to state. Going after fish with a knife would not only be a difficult task but may not even be legal. Any fish of a decent size will just swim away after you stab it most likely anyway. I've killed hundreds of fish big and small. Your certainly not going to subdue a tuna or most any other gamefish...Fresh OR saltwater. I suppose you could "noodle" (catch with hands) for some catfish with a mask & fins & then stab the catfish a few times- But what for? You already got 'em! Would that be Grabbin' & Stabbin'??? Hehhehhe!!! ![]() Also it is not advisable to do any type of diving while solo...Especially breath-hold or apnea diving. If you insist on diving alone absolutely don't push it at all...That means very conservative breath holds, dive depths, depth of water your in, distance out from shore, time in the water, etc. etc. - and absolutely do not be negatively buoyant. You will also need a dive flag to be legal and for safety. From the sound of your post(s) you should check out this web-site a bit more thouroughly before you go out breath-hold diving with a knife to TRY to kill fish. Not saying that most of us here would'nt want to see and hear of it being done(freedive fishing with just a knife) if it really happened and was true - But in most peoples opinion it would be a bit foolhardy to even try. Good luck in your endeavors dude...

You're right, I may loose the $130 knife if I accidently don't hold onto it firmly enough..
You really need a flag? I think I'll learn and try to catch fish with my hands before I start real hunting.. Last edited by kingj0n; September 18th, 2007 at 05:29. Reason: people making fun of me for "legal" reasons? |

Then don't read it. If you're so convinced you're more elitest here, then simply don't read it nor reply to what I say.. It's that simple.. And trying to get someone banned or have their topic removed for no apparent reason is just rude.. Grow up.
If you do not like my idea of asking if you can hunt with a knife, simply ignore it! I don't know much of hunting underwater, that's why I asked the question in the beginners forum... If you do not wish to add info, simply just don't bother typing nor reading what was typed out.. You sound more like a troll trying to start an argument for no reason.. You sir/miss, need to grow up. And no, I never been under 8ft water. I'll carry my knife, since people here say, every diver should carry a knife. I was wondering if that knife can be used as hunting. Of course I won't use it when I start, it's too dangerous. But if a shark comes my way, I hope I don't have to "try" and use it... |

well then i suggest you read my last reply on the beginners forum, its not about being elite its about taking it seriously, wanting to learn more, and respecting fellow forum members. I am not here to get into an argument with you, if your serious about learning that is great. But a little respect will go along way here.
And sure you can ask what you want to and we will help all we can if you are serious about being here and wanting to learn, We are a close group of friends and this site is an amazing resource. But yeah go read the post I made on the other thread.

Supposedly SCUBA divers occasionally knife flatties. I haven't heard of freedivers or spearos doing this but I expect some do (or used an unloaded spear gun or pole spear). I purchase a steel crab hook sometime ago that can be pushed back through the handle to reveal a "fish spike" -- presumably for spiking flatties?
I wouldn't use a $130 knife for diving though (gold & silver Rambo knife? |

I knife flatties with cheap rapala bait knife.
It is considered macho to knife wolffish here... balls of steel are required tho.

Wow...So people DO knife fish! Cool...I can see how you could do it with certain species like flounder & other sluggish fish like the wolf fish or catfish...Probably not too sluggish once you poked 'em though! Like Atomichaggis said "Balls of steel"...Or if a sharp knife was used I'd say "Brains of butter" if the fisher were bigger than 20 inches or so. Could be fun with a SPIKE though!
Still think this could be inherently dangerous if a SHARP knife is used. I'd use maybe just a spike of some sort. The world never ceases to amaze me! Did you know they make wallets outta wolf fish skins? Where they sell them they chop there heads off...For OBVIOUS reasons!

I heard Manny Puig wacks barracudas with a knife - I've seen and held the knife - which would definitely spare you the need of a few weights. My guess, based on the knife design, is he gets close (duh) then swings it with some wrist action and lops they heads off. I'd think you could hunt lingcod with a knife - but it would take some serious grabbage - better to have something with a barb.
