All
I have just bought a Mares Phantom Carbon in Italy, the spear is held in at the front by the line so as not to obstruct the view for easier sighting than you get with a normal mechanism to hold the spear in. This is all well and good but i'm new to this spearfishing lark and am now out of my depth, to hold the spear in the line must be tight, but for this to happen does the line have to be exactly the right length to fit the automatic line release tightly? My old gun is very basic and came ready set-up so this is all new to me. Also I am off to Sicily in 2 weeks if anyone can help. I will mostly be using the gun in cornwall though. Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks Tom |

You need a bungie mate, that elasticates a section of the line so you can get it over your line clip and it remains taught.
Have a search for bungie, there's lots of ways of doing it, both commercial and home bodged.

Easiest home made way I find is to get some bungie cord (any chandlers will have it in lots of diameters, get something around 3mm. Tie a simple granny knot in the bungie with your gun line through it and pull it REALLY tight with a pair of pliers on the tag end. Now rap the gun line around the bungie for about a foot and tie another overhand knot in the bungie around the line, again, TIGHT.
The two knots lock the coils around the bungie but the coils allow the bungie to stretch whilst still having all the strength of your mainline holding the fish.
