Dive prep for may 2008 CA hunt

I decided to head to California to get into the pacific and maybee get to see a friend. I figured I had better do it know as all my friends and family live scattered up and down the Alantic cost of the U.S. and I don't know when I'll have the oppertunity to get in California waters again as the family is getting older.
Any way I have tried to find a dive buddy through this site. Posted a thread and had a couple people try to put me in touch with other people. I actually got to talk on the phone to M but have not been able to get a second return call from him. Getting very fustrating as I really don't have the funds for expensive tourist boat trips and may end up having to sleeping in car for several nights if I have to go that route. I also need to pick up a gun and a few other odds and ends that my buddy provided when we dove.
In my add I even offered to pay for gas and food to the individual who would take me out diving. I guess I can understand, newbiees can be iffy, can they really swim worth a damn, are they in shape, do they know how to handle a weapon. All the things I would wonder about. Convincing people can be tough cause they may just be saying what you want to hear so you will take them out.
Daughter met a guy at the bar she works at who is from the area I will be at will try and give him a call tonight. He told her he has contacts.
