dont worry about it dude, we all gotta do what we gotta do sometimes and its work before play. there will be plenty of opportunities to make it out. who knows, maybe sometime next week.

i, personally, am off school and work for 3 weeks straight. so provided my stuff gets here tomorrow, ill be out quite a bit while i can.

Re: newport beach, ca area

Cresent Bay is just south of Cyrstal cove by about 1/4 mile. The reef in question is a swim done from a small sandy beach. Its a good swim but can be worth it. It is a couple hundred yards off a rock formation named "seal rock" named for the seal collony that likes to hang out there.

Will probably be down there about 7am or so depending on the tide.

Re: newport beach, ca area

I usually dive solo but I do have a buddy I dive with around laguna. He will probably show for sunday. I get up early for several reasons, it is what I am use to and I also have a wife and 2 kids + 1 more on the way so I try to balance my time and keep my obsession in check. I usually take the whole family to the laguna area though. A pole spear is perfect for the sandy beach at cresent bay, up in the surf area and on both sides of the cove you will find plenty of large corbina and it has also provided my freind and I nice Halibut.

thats great news! thanks joel, my spear and equipment is scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning, so i am considering going out tomorrow.. even if the conditions are only decent.. just to get out there.

would you have any tips on what depths to find these fish? i will plan on checking out cresent bay most likely.

Re: newport beach, ca area

NIce! nothing like new gear showing up at your door!

This conditions should be great it nothing changes (we can hope anyways)
but you can check local conditions at Laguna Sea Sports They post a dive report every morning from Shaws cove which is the next cove over from Cresent Bay. The Corbina and Perch "should" be very close to shore in from 3-6 feet of water. The larger Corbina "should" be at the south side of the cove at the very end. The entire beach is sandy bottom so the Halibut can be anywhere. There is reef on either side for the cove with some nice views.

If there is ANY swell be careful when you are up near the shore, Cresent Bay has some of the best shore break around and is one of my favorite places to bodyboard. Even getting caught off guard by as small one can toss you on your head.

Hope this helps! enjoy and be safe

Joel

PS what kind of Pole SPear did you pick up? I have a JBL travel spear and I just picked up a GAT-KU 8' pole spear that I have yet to use.

haha thats funny you ask, i too got the JBL travel spear.. i didnt realize the one i ordered didnt come with a paralyzer tip though.. just a rocktip i think.. should be fine for today though.. and i can always find a paralyzer to fit it right? i kept searching their site to get the specifics but i think all their poles are 6mm threads right? cause i would like to get different tips.

i was also looking at the gat-ku spears for the future.. and possibly his paralyzer tip (the blue flared one) instead of a regular one. not sure yet.

i would be cool with going on sunday.. if i went both days i think my GF would be in a pretty pissy mood by sunday afternoon

consider me in for sunday morning.. and yes, i drive. we will set everything up here in the thread,. im not much of an early bird (i can never fall asleep before 1 or 2am) but i will set my alarm and everything.. and hopefully ill get up.. but just in case, lets post all the specifics in here.. like where it is (directions if needed).. what time to be there (example: 7am-11am) and so on.. that way if for some reason i wake up a little late i can still rush down there and find you guys out in the water.

i live almost right on PCH in huntington so its just cruising 10-15 miles south on it to hit most of these laguna spots.

Re: newport beach, ca area

i live in costa mesa so im not to far either. i was thinking that maybe we can all carpool or something find a good meeting spot and head out there together. i dont know where anyone else lives so i cant really say where. somewhere central to all of us tho. about the paralizer spear tip. i bought one at sports chalete in south coast plaza. it was like $25 something like that. and it was the barbed one. so the fish doesnt slip off the spear. just a reminder you should have a fishing lisence with a ocean fishing stamp on it if you want to go out spearing. i mean you can risk it, but its always safe to have one. i also bought that at sports chalete. cant remember how much that was tho. i have never been asked to show it but i have one just in case.

yeah i just got mine a few days ago lol.. and got the ocean stamp on it. i think it came to $50 but its different for different age ranges.

im about to head down to check out crescent bay.. just ate and im gonna stretch and relax for a bit.. get all my stuff ready. probably meeting a buddy down there when he finishes some designs.

i know sports chalet has them, ill probably go get one in a few days, i think for the first trip or two ill be ok with just the tip i got.. but definitely wanna get the paralyzer soon. guess ill know after today how much ill need it or not right away lol.

what cross streets in costa mesa? i lived there for a year off harbor/adams.. and my school is by ikea (art institute).. plus we are always up at metro pointe or south coast looking around. just wondering.

see you all back on here in a few hours! i have a sony DSC-T1 (cybershot) with water housing that i bought for bodyboarding shots.. but now i get to use it for this! ill try to get a few pictures if possible.
