Jack Prodonovich, 1913-2008

One of the true fathers of our sport passed away Thursday evening. If you are not familiar with Jack and the San Diego Bottom Scratchers, this link will give you an idea of what pioneers they were.

San Diego Bottom Scratchers Freediving Club

Even from 3000 miles away, Jack had a big influence on me.

The Bottom Scratchers were featured in National Geographic, the May 1949 issue titled, "Goggle Fishing in California Waters." It was written by David Hellyer and photographed by Lamar Boren, who was one of the Bottom Scratchers.

I was just 10 years old then and living in Florida, but I distinctly recall reading that article and being fascinated by the stories and photographs of that California underwater scene. I think it was one of the significant things that kindled my interest in diving.

I never knew him, but was honored to meet him and shake his hand at a party honoring the fathers of the sport sponsored by the Freedivelist several years go.

May he rest in peace.

Re: Jack Prodonovich, 1913-2008

Well bummer! That is sad news indeed. I loved his guns and the innovations he and his mates came up with and they were innovations at the time. I wonder what he really thought of the way the sport turned out, hopefully it hasn't turned out that bad but what a contrast from those heady days back when he was a youngster.

Thanks for letting us know Bill

Re: Jack Prodonovich, 1913-2008

I knew of him as one of the fathers through reading stories of the beginings of our sport. Some names were legend anywhere in the world where there were spearo's. Jack Prodonovich was one of those names.

RIP

Dave

Jack will truly be missed, and will be remembered by those who carry on his sportsmanlike legacy and love of the sea.
