Re: BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

Wow! Brushes-with-Slugs -We don't got stuff that big here; .

Speaking of Campfires - I saw several hundred canadian geese today; crapping on my dive-site. I figure it's an omen.

Any esoteric secrets to flying with monofins?

PS - here's just an auto pass in Photoshop CS2

Re: BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

I did consider that - but hunting geese with a speargun would be a bit conspicuous.

Yup: carry-on. They fit behind the last seats against any bulkhead. If you get accosted at any point, insist that they are top-loaded in the belly if it must be, stating that the fin is a one-off worth over 1000$.

Re: BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

PS - since I know a couple of you freshwater spearos monitor this thread I thought I'd post these from yesterday's dive. I went out to the area where I found the burbot - long swim in 3-4c water and air - with a stiff breeze out of the west. The fish are very stand-offish this time of year - you can see puffs of sediment in these pics where fish took off before I even saw them. Mostly suckers but I need to work on my breathholds in very cold water after a long swim - and get used to the depth. Anyway - chanced upon this beauty at the end of a breathhold. Close enough for a speargun - but not as close as I'd like for the camera. Needed air! this guy is around 65cm - the burbot was probably more than 70cm.

Re: BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

REALLY big perch It might be what they call a Saugeye - which is a mix of a sauger and a walleye - I think they have more of the vertical stripe type look. I though maybe they were spawning - hence the big belley - but they do that in spring so I think it was just stuffed with Gobies. Anway - the white tips on Tail and anal fin are a sure giveaway - and the opaque looking eyes of course.

Re: BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

I think the record perch in Alberta was 2.2 lbs!
They taste the same as walleye to me... my favourite freshwater fish.

Re: BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

Perch are my fav too - though I've never had burbot. I don't know why - but fish allways look smaller to me underwater than they actually are. It's like the water makes them look closer - but not bigger. If I had to guess I'd put that Walleye in the 5-7lb range. Definitely the biggest I've seen - and really stocky - built more like a giant perch.

Must be the fresh water. Here in the salt, ALL the fish look bigger than when I'm pulling the shaft from them. Blessed Photoshop, eh?

BTW, when do we make travel arrangements, ie, where do I fly into and who's driving?
