Polespear grip modification - easy to grab/hold

hello db,

i modified the grip area on my polespear---see pics.

i used a piece of foam a bit thinner than the one in the picture beside the spear. i slide it into place, which required some effort, and then hockey taped over it.

i went spearing and it worked very well and made the shaft easy and comfortable to grab/hold. the spear still sank from the surface with the rubber and foam grip. i don't think the added grip slows the spear down too much, although i am new to spearing and likely not the best judge.

on my first outing it easily fully skewered (face-first, down the length of the body) and paralysed a nice rock cod (my first speared fish).

i would love to hear any feedback regarding the setup from those of you experienced with using a polespear.

I used a mix of gelcoat & sand on mine...Works awesome but a bit rough on un-gloved hands.

The best pole spear grip/wrap I have used is the one I use on my pole spears that I build. You can see an example of it if you click on the link below my name. I use tuna cord and wrap it around the spear in a spiral with around a 1 1/2" spacing between the cord.
I Use a piece of tape to temporarily hold the cord so it will stay put.
I use amalgamating tape (self sealing, self fusing tape) to make the grip. I make two complete wraps for the grip. Amalgamatin tape doesn't have an adhesive and will need to be streched while wrapping to fuse to it's self.
You can get amalgamating tape at Home Depot. Tune cord can be replaced with any cord or rope.

definitely will! i think im gonna go with the tuna cord and amalgamating tape combo. im also about to start the process of a custom float tube with net/stringer.

I tried that rubber tape about 3 weeks ago...So far it is holding up nicely!

when you are finished, post pics of all your DIY stuff, including the float---love to see the custom projects.

the amalgamating tape stuff sounds good. the one thing i would add about the foam tube i used, is that it retains a fair bit of give, even after taping, which as a result makes it very easy to grip and hold.
