new RA open muzzle

I had never seen a production version of the new Rob Allen open muzzle, just a few photos and a drawing from Rob.
I got the barrel for my new 90 cm salmon and rockfish gun last night. The new open muzzle is absolutely gorgeous!!!!
It's very sleek, raises the bands up toward the shaft, and gets them off the barrel, all at the same time as it is really sleek.
Now I just have to wait 3 months to use it ; (

Ignore the snow in the background. I keep trying to. I know it will be gone in a couple of months

Re: new RA open muzzle

ok this maybe a stupid question but my mate has 2 guns and they both are enclosed muzzles. Which to me is logic, so the spear stays in place. Using that muzzle in the picture why doesnt the spear lift while diving and such?

Re: new RA open muzzle

What happens is that the mono shooting line hooks into and across those two notches at the front. That is enough to hold down the shaft securely. Here's a pic of a similar set up on a Wong

Re: new RA open muzzle

Interesting design. I like the way it guides the rubbers but it appears bigger & bulkier than I would have expected. I thought the idea was a simpler & more stream-line muzzle. The Muzzle also seems longer (or is that an illusion?) - does that mean the total length of say an 80cm gun will be a few cm longer (obviously the barrel length itself will not change). Do you find loading/aiming open muzzles better? When I posed the question to RA some time ago, he didn't seem to be a fan. So I wonder if this is just a fashion/fad. Anyone compared it to the aftermarket Hammerhead open muzzles or Rabitech open muzzle?

When I started, I found loading a close muzzle a pain to deal with but now find it very helpful when loading, sorting out spear-line routing & the occasional jam. I try to aim along the side of the gun, so the aiming thing is a non-issue for me (although from the forums posts, clearly a lot of people do aim along the top). I expect folk will prefer whatever they are used to - unless it doesn't work for them.

Re: new RA open muzzle

finn relaxed 003.JPG

Here are the measurements for three muzzles I have (LxWxH in mm).

Rob Allen Closed 57 x 56 x 58
Rob Allen open 68 x 37 x 39
Hammerhead 61 x 28 x 34

I like the open muzzles, but definitely would never say they were the best. Just what I like. And, for my RA 130 I still have a closed mzzle. I think it aids long range "aiming"

I won't know until summer whether the sleeker RA open muzzle is any easier to swing, or whether the length of the tube is the limiting factor (quite possible).
