Everybody has their favorite "best" speargun(s). What about the other end of the scale? Yoou know, the one where you couldn't hit the fish that the tip of the shaft was touching, or the one that broke the first time you fired it, or...
So, what is or was your worst? Mine was a very old copy of a Champion arbalete I had in the late 60s and early 70s. Even that one wasn't all that bad. It killed fish if they were close enough. At those ranges the soft squiggly iron shaft didn't make all that much difference. Howard |

Hi.
The "champion" that ure talking about, is it the chamion with the rubber stomac plate and that had a pistil grip for training the gun halfway down the barrel?' |

My Champion Arbalete that I got in the mid 1950s was my first "real speargun" so I had no real basis for comparison. I'm sure I would consider it pretty humble now, but I did manage to shoot jewfish, grouper, cobia, snook, etc.
In the photo, my girlfriend is holding it, and it has the optional handle on mid barrel to help swing it. I'm holding a Cressi spring gun and its bent shaft. In a way, that was probably the worst gun I've ever owned, but I did manage to take fish with it. We just didn't know any better back then.

Bill, the Cressi must be a "Cernia Velox" or "Folgore", can't tell from the picture.
My Grandpa used to hunt with those. Today such a long, bulky, unbalanced, underpowered spring gun would probably be the worst choice (I know they're still for sale somewhere), but at that time they were very popular, and they were rated as the best guns that technology could offer in those late 50's... Time flies. We should compare guns of the same epoch and still we couldn't agree on best and worst. Bill the girl looks great too. Did she became Mrs. McIntyre if it's allowed asking? Well no, I think that will remain between me and Jim.
But to answer the first question, I went with that girl from my senior year in high school to late in my senior year in college, and then she wised up. She didn't become Mrs. McIntyre, but I have fond memories nevertheless.

Great story guys,
Jim , Jon was looking for you. I also was going to kick your tires about some fins, but I am still procrastinating (since my medium hybrid were damage on the flight to Brazil) My mom told me she went on a date with the late Bruno Hermany once, she does not quite remember the details. But that is beyond the scope of this thread. Maybe we could start a need thread mom's famous dates, since Bill is a famous guy in this forum !
