Ciao Susie, come va?
at the website it says the competition will take place in the Melia Hotel. Does this mean you are no longer based at Club Sharm? William. |

4 locals, 6 succesful dives and 4 NRs.
5 foreigners… 1 successful dive Sharm has beautiful clear, deep waters close to shore, but the conditions may not be ideal for max attempts: 43ºC air and 31ºC water are too hot for freediving, and dives that anywhere else are fairly straightforward become difficult here. Low BP due to the hot climate is the main culprit, and the diet at the resort restaurant doesn’t help. Several people nearly had packing blackouts at half max packs… The organisation is impeccable, and I think it will be an incredible world championships, as long as everyone assesses carefully the effect of the conditions on their performance. Hopefully the water should have cooled down to something more manageable (28ºC), and the organiser was talking about working with the resort to create a menu more appropriate for athletes. Rumours also of Umberto Pelizzari attending the last few days and closing ceremony… |

Its fascinating still after 6 years of fanatic freediving there are still so much to learn. With a new PB three days before competition and finaly set on which suit and weight to wear (which has been my main problem after sussing out how to warm up)... I felt strong enough for CNF 53. Even though stomach problem it felt like an easy dive and there was no nervousness.
But then back at the surface waking up in the cheerfull arms of judge Lotta I realized it had not been an easy dive. All my oxygen had somehow ended up in my body and not in my brain. Body felt fine, too fine - but as Will explained above blood pressure was in an all time low and SWB had claimed me. Seeing how all those who lived and trained in Dahab succeeded I (once again) learnt how important acklimatization is. Next day I thought I had the answer: Stomach problems, a slight fever and indications of sinus squeeze felt like small problems if I just could get my BP up slightly and get a more vasodiluted brain. So this day hardly no ventilation and more packing and some of Winrams liqorice should solve the problem. I also skipped the suit and went in swimming trunks, hoping for at least some vasoconstriction (in arms and legs) in the luke warm water. I was preparing for a hypocapnic dive with lots of lactic acid. Unfortunatly I changed one parameter too many when I also skipped the mask (for the first time in comp) and at 43 meters I found it impossible to equalize even thought I had the air for it... strange (Winram claimed it took several months to get use to no mask diving). So no results but lots of new understanding of body and of freediving. Sebastian

Thanks for the update Sebastiain. I found it warm enough there in winter dont think I could stick 40+ in any way shape or form.

Hey everyone
A late posting from me, after flying to the UK the day after the comp. Again it was a hugely successful competition for me, and that may go some way to proving Will's aclimatisation theories - I live and train in Dahab so the 1 degree increase in water temp did nothing to negatively impact my dives. Back in the UK, at SaltFree in waters significantly colder - 18 on the surface and down to something that felt VERY chilly at 50+m - I agree that there is a definite 'freshness' about diving in cold water that could be an advantage. Felt vasoconstriction in my feet like I've never felt before! Again, a successful competition, if somewhat conservative announcements given it was my first cold water experience ever! No fins felt much easier than I expected, which was nice! One week, two great comps, one very happy little freediver! Thanks to both organisers, all the judges, safety divers, scuba safety and tireless behind the scenes volunteers who make it all happen for us. xxx Sara
