Re: Insults and abuse

Brilliant! I was actually going to suggest the same thing, myself. After all, for years one's status in the British House of Commons (or so it has been reported, never been there m'self, too colonial or something) is to a degree based on one's ability to artistically skewer the opposition. It might be good practice for politics. I, for one, get really tired of seeing our collection of windbags in the Senate mouth tedious compliments to each other in the name of debate.

Interesting. Since I am sort of an academic and use more subtle ways to express my malehood I find these less civilised ways of asserting ones selfvalue very amusing (in a socio anhropological way).

Agression as a way of "standing up for yourself". Is this some kind of verbal welder "your mama" (see MTV) kind of way of posing as being a person on top of things.

I bet you tuff welder males have lots of tatoos (another ridiculous way of implying being a lot tougher/interesting than you probably are). Same goes for piercing (image, image, image).

Is this tough-talk not just an animal topdog contest where you hear a lot of barking but very little "biting". What I am trying to say (in an insultive way) is that "talk is cheap". And if I did this well I might have offended some tatoed persons aswell.

:-)

Hehe Well it's allways good to see a stereotypical resumé in the morning.

None of the guys have tatoos including me. And on the "yo momma" I don't know why but I guess "working" for a living with metal and in smoke and dust, getting burns and what not. Makes you tougher also in the language.

I mean when getting a melted piece of pipe on my neck does not leave me saying something nice

That beeing said we may look like an angry mob, but we are the nicest guys. And you are right on the "Empty barrels make the most noise" but I wouldnt call it cheap talk. Its just a nice way of venting stuff. I found that among big guys that look like they could hurt someone, there is no longer a need to "act" like your tough. And it makes for a very relaxed workplace.

Hope this helped

Edit: On the dog note. When you see a bunch of dogs running free , the big dogs allways run arund having fun beeing relaxed, while the small dogs run around barking their head of beeing all "I may be little but I can hurt you, yes I can!" The big dog could explain everything with a single snarrl, while the little dog have to get all verbal : )

Re: Insults and abuse

Folks,

I'm very pleased to see this discussion going on - forums are a notoriously difficult place to keep on the straight and narrow. There are always going to be mis-communications and the occasional flare up with attitudes or tempers but on the whole the DB community is good at keeping things under control.

I am very proud of the mentor team and the team leaders here on DB. They all do a stunning job and generally make very sensible decisions. They have a private area on these forums that allow them to discuss threads and posts before having to take any action and very often they all debate what to do before anyone does anything. They work all the time on keeping these forums a nice place and very often you don't even know they are working as moderating posts and threads are only a small portion of their duties.

It is important to note that whilst I am an advocate of free speech - these forums are not are a "right" - in that you are granted a privilege of being allowed to join and contribute but if you break the house rules you will be given formal disciplinary action - this is normally a cool off PM first, then a second stern warning and then finally a ban (which is permanent). The only people who are banned outright at the moment are Spammers as they are total scum, otherwise everyone else has the opportunity to correct their action.

If anyone has any particular problems with any methods or policys they should be directed to me via PM or on stephan.whelan@deeperblue.net

Well since I am not ""working"" for a living. I lack this experience. I guess its like getting very emotional when your computor says "I have encountered a fault, shall I send an error report...e t c". I ususally say something prophane in such circumstances.

Thank you Seal - its much more clearer now.

I noticed you have a misspelled word and also said 'more clearer'. Clearly you are upset. I work as a network administrator, which is almost as bad as being an academic, yet I am intensely macho. I express this primarily by diving in very cold water, practicing martial arts in the snow and, when necessary, swearing at small animals - particularly ducks. When diving I am offended by the presence of people in what I regard as my water. I enjoy ignoring stunningly beautiful women. I avoid confrontations with other humans on the premise that the universe is allready punishing them sufficiently.

Re: Insults and abuse

It's a pity that we do need such reminders every once in a while. What suprised me is the number of replies it got so quickly - seems it's a sensitive topic (duh - I'm being particularly brilliant today ...) I'm so used to passionate flare-ups on Spanish forums that even DB's occasional bad mouthers are just really throwing rose petals at each other compared to others out there!

In any case, as good cooks, let's permit for spicy seasoning, but not too much or people's tounges will burn, eyes will see red and most surely steam will bellow from the mouth. You know, typical image of a Tibetan deity in violent retribution. Enough to scare off almost anybody.

Ah thanks for reminding me, I need to reserve the Pacific Ocean in July, for my trial attempt World Swim. Would everyone please find alternative dive sites (rivers, backyard pools...) for 07/07/007 between 7am and 7pm? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Insults and abuse

I am a member of a sportbike forum and the tolerance is much higher around language and topics. I enjoy it immensely and it has a very different flavour to it, but it is very localized and most of us know each other beyond cyberspace, so many persons' characters are known, changing the dynamic of communication.

DB is a little different obviously, but it is what it is and for me it's been a goldmine, plus an extremely important part of my life. I have met some of the best people ever, through this forum.
If we can keep it relatively 'as is' (of course it will evolve over time), then it will stay a great resource for all of us and future members.
My usual intervention when I observe things getting personal on the internet is to get people to imagine they are sitting in a coffee shop or a pub over a drink, hopefully conveying the understanding that most flame-wars would never happen in that situation.
The writer and the reader need to examine their reactions and slow down the energy before posting in cyberspace.
Even me
Peace my friends, not enough of it in the world at the moment.
Erik
