Jesus you and me both mate, mind you it looks a bit like he’s going to give the shark a good bite back.
![]() Which is a dam sight better than I’d of managed; the only thing on my mind would have been that I hope they clean the brown stuff out of my wetsuit before they lay me out. |

ok, heres the story as told to me by GR....they were diving out of St Pete FL in about 120 ft of water doing well on aj's, cobia, snapper and grouper. One of the divers shoots an aj and this mako does what it does best and appears from nowhere snatching the aj in one bite. Rightfully freaked out, he srtarts shouting for the crew to get to the boat, theres a big f'n hungry mako out. GR is quite a ways away and instead of getting in the boat he swims to where the shark was seen as everyone else who is sane climbs aboard for safety.
The vis was bad, about 30' but GR really wants to see the shark so he dives to about 45 ft and levels out hoping to catch a glimpse. Well needless to say, he gets alot more than a glimpse as the shark appears below him, charging mouth open. When the shark is no more than 8' away, mouth open and coming fast GR is forced to let the steel fly. The huge beast drags him like no other fish hes ever seen and this is coming from a man that has shot many tuna in excess of 250#. After an extended sleigh ride, the fish is finally subdude. No hard feelings, the shark was just doing what it does and so was GR. Almost a meeting of 2 apex predators in their element.

I take it we can assume that the Mako wasn't just ambling slowly towards him showing it's Colgate white smile. So he had the time it took to react to seeing the shark, swing his gun down aim and fire, all in the time it took the fish to swim about 22ft (a mako is one of the fastest fish in the sea). So he didn't get that reputation for nothing then!

Sounds like a stupid thing to do, risking your life like this. I wouldn't wanna be there if the shark had turned up the winner.

It's actually quite a well documented incident now. One of the other forums had quite a lot of info and pictures about it.
