I am new to spearfishing and i am looking into some better fins. I was looking at the Cressi gara 3000 or the Riffe silent hunter. Any thoughts on either of these finns? Pro or Cons? Thanks Peter gunn

I have used both fins. I started with the Cressi Gara 3000 and loved them. They were a great introduction fin. Good for diving anywhere from 20ft-80ft. The footpockets were very comfortable.
The Riffes are the fins I use now (though I still use my Garas for shallower dives.) The blades are a bit stiffer and I find them better for deeper diving. Some will say that the softness of the footpockets lessen the power transfer with the blades but I dont really notice that. The footpockets arnt quite as confortable as my Garas but that could just be the shape of my foot too. The plus with the riffes as apposed to the Cressis is that you have the option of changing the blades down the road. If you break one of the cressi blades you have to get a whole new pair. If you break a riffe you can order just the blade. YOu can even order different blades and use the same foot pockets. Last the channels on the riffes make them a little more efficient but harder to maneuver when diving caves or shallow reefs.

OMER makes very nice fins as well. I have a pair of them and my brother has the gara 2000's. The OMER's are a little bit longer, but other than that they seem to perform equally.
My only gripe with big company fins is that they slap their name where ever it will fit. Especially OMER - I think I counted seven OMER logos on each fin! |

The silent hunter and 3000 garas are both great fins. The 3000ld fins are very comfortable and at least to me were great for long surface swims, they felt smooth with each kick. Only complaint was that they scuff real easy and that sometimes I wanted a bit more power behind the blade. The longer the stroke behind my kick the further I got rather than kicking hard and short. The riffe SH are also nice fins no complains really and a bit stiffer blade but for me the gara foot pocket felt better.
...... also nothing against them but I'm sick hearing about the ice fins give it a rest for once, the guy didn't even ask about them. |

Can't offer an opinions on the other fins mentioned, but I have so far been happy with my gara 3000ld's for diving anywhere from 10-40 feet, but feel like it wouldn't be a problem to go deeper either. I am a smaller guy (5'9" 152 lbs) and I wouldn't want a much stiffer fin, but if your in the 180+ range, you may have the strength to over power these fins, but I guess it depends on what kind of diving you are doing. Hope this helps!

Stiffer doesn't necessarily mean better. My strongest advice is to buy a fin that you can change the blades, whether they're plastic, fiberglass, carbon or composite. My next strongest advice is to get into a fiberglass fin.
Happy hunting.

Are you referring to the fact that the blades are notorious for 'exploding' during normal use?
