Thinking about setting out chum bags

hi everyone,
i love to go fishing off the coast of Rhode Island. i mostly fish and freedive off of a beach. ok its not really a beach... the beach ends and then it is like a huge beach but instead of sand there are rocks... so there is this rock out about 75-100 feet into the water. ti should say that it is 2 rocks very close to each other so there is like a crevice in between them. inside the crevice there are lots of blackfish. but when i dive near them they all of a sudden swim away. i have tried everything to get within 10-15 feet of them. i was thinking about making a chum bag and attach a few weights and throw it down there. at low tide the depth is about 5-8 feet so i will be able to easily retrieve the bags. however at high tide the depth is around 12 feet and i cant dive that deep very comfortably. (ear pressure) i figure that if the fish are feeding then they will be less likely to notice me when i swim. these chum bags will also help me in my fishing as well so i really want to set some down there. has anybody ever built one of these bags? if so could anybody give me tips/pointers on how to make them? BTW, there is also a bluefish run in mid to late august so im afraid that if they find my bags they will chew them up. maybe a PVC pipe with holes drilled in it will work better? thanks for any feedback!

Re: Thinking about setting out chum bags

use a mesh bag, and pop a few weights in them. u have to know the species u are targeting and use the proper bait. some fish can be very picky. also you can throw in a lightstick to intice their curiousity. toss it in and give it 15-30 mins.
the downside of chumbags is that you can attract unwanted fish, i.e. sharks
also if you are chumming, it is usually recomendable to avoid doing so near public beaches and such.

Re: Thinking about setting out chum bags

a mesh bag is the cheapest way to go, just be careful of what else it may attract

when im fishing, i have some pvc chum pockets ( i think it is4 inch diameter pvc pipe, a foot long, with a cap on each end, 300 lb braided wire running thru the middle) they arent exactly expensive to make, and i just freeze blocks of chum in 2 litre bottles, to load em up, just cut the chum out of the bottle, put it in the pipe. dont drill holes too small, my chum pockets have half inch holes all thru them, and some 3/4 inch holes in the end caps, goal is not to have to empty out too much muck after i haul up... we run them on downriggers when drift fishing, 5 on each rigger, bottom at 100 feet and then at intervals up to the surface, im guessing something in that same design would work pretty good, but it'd be a lot easier to just use a mesh bag
