Spearfishing in Italy

Are we allowed to take our spearguns on a flight if they are in checked in luggage? Just spoken to Ryanair and they are not happy. Anybody travelled with a speargun to Italy?

Re: Spearfishing in Italy

The problem you have is that you mentioned the gun word It isnt against the law as far as Im aware to take spearguns into Italy but what you must do is pack them well and very securely, then label them as "Fishing Equipment" not spear guns. It may even be worth taking off the handle of your gun and putting it inside your main luggage, so that it is unusable straight off and wont look like a gun on the x-ray scans.
When I first started flying, they were carried as hand luggage! Havent times changed

Re: Spearfishing in Italy

as an italian, I normallly fly (to sicily or sardinia from continental Italy) with my spearguns packed with normal luggage. Never had any serious problems. The very only problem (just a waste of time) is that my gunbags are sometimes taken by airport police for control: thence I have to go to the police office, tell them that it's just fishing gear and they say: "ok". After that I simply pick my guns and go free.

Re: Spearfishing in Italy

You'll be fine as long as its well packed and checked in with your main luggage; Ryanair are just covering their bums, ask them if you can tack fishing equipment and see what the response is Mind you, its an excuse to buy a new gun

Re: Spearfishing in Italy

Hmm the plot thickens, I could get a new gun and leave it in Italy thereby forcing me to return for more fun!!

Re: Spearfishing in Italy

sorry, i forgot to write that control is at the arrival only. When you depart you just have to deliver the gun packed in bags together with the other luggage, without telling (it's not necessary, because fishing spearguns are not classified as weapons for italian laws). Notice that if you carry airguns, you have to unload the air to avoid accidents due to flight pressure (that's severely checked).

Re: Spearfishing in Italy

Left Pisa last night with 2 guns, packed separately, the guy on the BA check-in desk saw that I had 2 Cressi bags and asked if I had any "guns" in them, I said that I did and he called security over to get them checked, they also checked my knives as well. He said that the Italian security at airports are getting a bit over zealous at the moment and that it is much better to get them checked at check-in as it saves a load of hassle having to go down to the security rooms after the luggage has gone through the x-ray machines, this happened to me last yeat flying out of Genoa with my Underwater Scooter, spent best part of 2 hours explaning what it was, and that it wasn't a torpedo!!
