hi guys ANOTHER question.
looking at purchasing a monofin nd was looking for advise. i know that in bi-fins carbon pretty much reigns supreme however in monofins it seems to be the fibreglass new age style blades (Hyper, Glide etc). if i am to purchase a GOOD monofin do i go Carbon or Fibreglass. Looking along the lines of either a Leader Advanced carbon (or similar) or the leader or waterWay Hyper or glide. Will be used both for Dynamic and constant weight. thanks for any comments you might have. DD |

If you search around for it there was an interesting thread by dave mullins in which he ran tests constant weight on all fin type, plastic, fiberglass, carbon, on bi-fins and provided data for all the dives, it basically implied there was not much difference between the materials and the performance. I think the bigger concern might be how much angle and comfort and fit of pockets and blade stiffness choices that will vary with diving style and build. I would contact manufacturers, they might be able to guide you to a good choice.

yep have done that already, contacted Special fins and they said it would be best to buy the Carbon fin over glass because higher performance (maybe just want to make a little more money i dont know), but then i spoke with a particularly good freediver and he said that fibreglass was still the way to go.
so may try and contact leader them selves, because the price (379EU) of the Hyper Professional and the Hyper Carbon are the same and these are the fins i am trying to decide between. if not maybe just get satndard Hyper which is cheaper and probably still a very good fin. DD |

Just a subjective observation from the world championships in 2007 (constant weight)
About 90% class fiber, an odd carbon fin here or there. Conclusion? If there is a difference, it cannot be significant enough to warrant loosing sleep over. Just find one that is the correct size, angle, stiffness and price. If it happens to be carbon, it certainly doesn't hurt, but don't shun on excellent fins that are not.

Leaderfin Hyper is a quite good fin (I've got a "soft" one, since september). But I've tried a Glide in medium stiffness three weeks ago in Dahab, and I was amazed by this fin, so confortable, and the blade is really better than mine. I didn't go deeper than 20m with the Glide, because we hadn't much time (and it was a very windy day at Lighthouse), so I didn't feel the compressibilty of the rubber of the Glide. I've seen on the Leaderfin's website, that they produce a new Hyper with a carbon blade... May be it can interst someone. .../... |
