Spearfishing in Kauai

I am a first time spearfisherman, and absolutely loving it. I have checked out the North shore, and see a lot of fish, but not sure which ones are edible, regulation, or tasty. I ran into a lot of Pacific Chubs (Nenue), and they dont seem to be too smart. Is this a tasty one to take? Also, does anyone know what I should be targeting? Any advice on the fish would be awesome!

I found the Nenue to be ok eating. Of the species I tried there my favorite were any of the goat fish species, uku, and mu.

Re: Spearfishing in Kauai

Since it looks like you have internet....check out the state regulations for Kauai, HI and then you will know. Try to find charts with local species and study them before just shootin whatevas. Heck, if you can hook up with someone with a boat, try to get them to take you out further to score some ulua, ono, mahi, etc. Be prepared to flex some muscle though. They fight real good, but taste DELICIOUS. Otherwise, try South Shore (Poipu) and score some goatfish, snapper, big eye, etc. Better yet, just ask the lifeguards at the tower across from Brenneckes Rest. what is good. They throw out their hukilau all the time and pull some pretty good hauls and BBQ right there. Let me know how it goes.
