Canuck in Kiwi land

Hey I just arrived in Auckland and am going to be in NZ for around a year or so, wondering wher is a good place to settle down with some work and good spearing/fishing nearby. I've got all the dive gear (i was in western aussie for a year) but my girlfriend and I wanna figure out a good place out of the city to start our travels. We were thinking coromandel or maybe the bay of islands, but am open to any suggestions.

Cheers

Hey "spearslinger22", Iīve been travelling all the norh Island and the south island for about a year with my girlfriend, there is really awesome diving in NZ, especilly the nort island.
So actually yes, Coromandel is really good for spearfishing, there I caught the biggest snapper in my live (was 12,8 kg), I can post a picture if you want.
Other really good places are Capiti Island, itīs in the south-west of the north island, and the hole area around there. The best spearfishing is probably white island.
If you look on a map, you will see that East Cape is amazing to dive, lots and lots of kingies around there.
If you are interested, I can describe how to access some really good places which I discovered around Whangerei, but pay attention dontīt spear any "red moki" , itīs a codex between spearfishers not to shoot them, you will often see them in the northern part of the north island, but itīs really to easy to spear them, (they donīt run away when they see you).
If you want I can give you some contact details from some spearfishing guys in NZ, they have boats and can go for a trip with you.

If, you have a car and 2-3 days frea at work, you can easily drive to Tapotupotu Bay ( Tapotupotu Bay, Neuseeland - Google Maps) in the far north it,s really perfect for camping, there is a DOC camping ground and if youīre staying on the beach you just have to walk a little bit on the right hand side of the beach, there are some rocks.Just walk for about 5 minutes on the rocks and than jump in the amazing water.
If you donīt have enough time, go to Matauri Bay (Matauri Bay, Northland, Neuseeland - Google Maps) , itīs half an hour by car from Kerikeri, there is a beach (itīs where the rainbow warrior is) and lots of people fishinf from boat there, just ask some guys if they can take you out with their boat, because in front of the beach there are some small islands, around there you will find some good places to dive.
If you have some more questions just post !

Hey there, i'm always out in the boat we live just north of Auckland and dive The Hauraki Gulf all the outer islands and the west coast...Can spear 20+ kg King Fish anytime and usually get snapper, crays and scollops in the average day on the water. You will find most of the jobs in Auckland unless you want seasonal work and most of the Dive sites are no more than 3-4hrs drive either North or South from here
Hope this helps..get in touch if you need anymore info or help with work
Cheers
