Serious about Seafood? Billingsgate Fish School.

I came across this place last year. It occurs to me that there are forum members that might be interested (I think SurfNSpear mentioned doing a Cordon Bleu cookery course). It is run as a charity to promote the use & knowledge of seafood:

Billingsgate Seafood Training School offers free training courses for Schools

There are some videos on the website too.

Re: Serious about Seafood? Billingsgate Fish School.

Despite visiting London regularly since the first time over 35+ years ago. I never managed to get to Billingsgate fish market. This was compounded by them closing the original one down and resiting it. I actually visited the old site as marked on my out of date map - no one tells me anything.

I didn't know where the "new" Billingsgate market was until I saw it while staying south of the river one weekend last Christmas. Had passed it just by Canary Wharf when travelling to see the Tutankhamun exhibition. It looked impresive as I cruised by on the DLR and if it's as neat as Canary Wharf centre then should be worth seeing. Got it on my list of must visit next time I cross the water.

To be honest, that looks like it would be worth a trip to Olde Blyghtye in itself. What fun!

Re: Serious about Seafood? Billingsgate Fish School.

I met one of the trustees of the school last year. He was clearly passionate about his seafood, we had a good chat. He likes Rick Stein (I didn't like to mention Padowstein's prices were a factor in me taking up spear fishing!*). Although I grudgingly concede that Rick has probably help popularise/raise awareness of quality seafood in the UK and Cornwall in particular. I prefer River Cottage Gone Fishing / Floyd on Fish.

Anybody see Looe on Coast yesterday evening? Apparently all the fishing from Looe is done from small day boats, because of the shallowness of the harbour, so they have gained reputation for unsurpassed freshness and quality. I had a fantastic lemon sole there a few years ago - perhaps that's why (and half the price of Padowstein).

*In hindsight, it would have been far cheaper to pay Rick's prices than take up spear fishing. Less fun though.
