Question for the educated masses.
For a short gun of about 60cm, for shooting into caves etc (in the sunny UK), is a multiprong head a good idea? What is the holding ability of these things? Ive never used one, wont the fish just struggle off? Or would I be better of with a single flopper? Thanks |

Trident or Pranger?
Big difference between the two, prangers while slow hold really well. Tridents are usually a little faster but on't hold as well. The idea with multipoint tips is that the chance of stoning a fish is much greater, more chance of hitting spine etc. If you hit anything vital the fish won't usually get off but there are always exceptions. Single flopper is much faster and will not get stuck as easy in caves.

Hiya
Depends on the size of fish are the type of gun. I used that same 5 prong set-up on a cressi sl55 pneumatic gun. It would simply cut the small fish (under 1kg) in half!!! Your accuracy also goes out by the window. Easy to stick with a normal fixed barb. Regards miles

Thanks Miles
In terms of accuracy, what are we talking about, I would imagine the longest shot being 1.5m, am I likely to miss over that distance? I dont think Id be shooting any fish as small as 1Kg, Im usually happy to let them swim at that size, so say 2Kg at the smallest |

For fast (careless) shots in caves for bass or mullet its perfect. Its not half bad for aspettos in very bad viz either. Will this be an airgun?

No, its a lowish powered 60cm woody with quite a lot of mass so thay it can be fired with no concern for its position relative to me, well thats the theory behind this particular gun anyway. I think I will give one a go, thats the best way to form an opinion I suppose, I was really concerned whether the fish would just wriggle off but I think Huan answered that for me.
Thanks everybody |

If the gun is really low powered I would think about trying to power it up a little those multiprongs take a lot of power to move, could you put slightly larger dia. rubbers on?
This would make sure that you got adequate penetration as well.

The rubbers are quite long (16mm dia) just a matter of shortening them a bit to get more power, to be honest the rubbers arent actually on the gun yet, they still need to be tied up, I was just assuning that it would need to be low power for shooting in a confined space and my face so close to the exit
some may say there would be no loss! |

I have always found that 5 prongers hold best if they are not overpowered. Too much power makes a big rip in the fish, often resulting in a tear off. They also seem to hold better when they are a bit rusty!
For hole and gully fishing I prefer an MATC trident cheers dave www.spearo.co.uk |
