Blood Spit

I took a week off from all apnea because I spit snot and blood the last time I was out. I thought that the cause of the blood spit was overdoing some reverse packing in the pool in the morning then diving that afternoon and stressing out the throat area.

Today I went and did my normal warm up with no problem. Followed by two 25m dives. I could feel the mucus behind the nose area building up so I hauked it back and spit it out....Once again the blood was there. All of my equalizations were easy even hands free most of the way.

So my question is where is this blood coming from?

I am begining to believe that it is coming from my sinus as there is no blood in the spit after diving. only while diving.

Confused

Jay

Re: Blood Spit

Could be sinus squeeze, I would say it's even likely, but you should eliminate the possibility of lung squeeze. And in any case, take a break from diving.

I get this every now and then. Some of the frontal sinuses get blocked and then I'm stupid enough to keep diving anyway, resulting in some bleeding from the nose.

The thing is, if you don't let it heal properly, it will keep on happening and I'm sure it's not very healthy in the long run. All kinds of infections and nasty things can hatch in there and just make the problem worse.

If the problem persists, a visit to a good ENT doctor would propably be in order?

Re: Blood Spit

Sounds like sinus squeeze. I have also had this problem...

Whatever it is, I agree with Simo that it's better to take a break from diving until it's sorted out.

Re: Blood Spit

It sounds like sinus squeeze to me. Something you can do while you are taking some time off is, take some decongestant of some sort to let the damaged sinus cavity drain out any of the old mucus and blood that may have been left behind. I often use a nedi pot to rinse out my nasal and sinus passages aswell as my sinus cavities. It sounds nasty to do, but really isn't and it actually feels pretty good afterwards. The other thing I find is that I can normally do a fernsell to equalize, no problem, but after having any troubles with my sinuses, I have to hold my nose to equalize even if everything is feeling good.

Re: Blood Spit

I don't think that it is a squeeze as there is no pain, but something is opening up as I dive and equalize and letting blood come out. I made sure to keep my head position correct this time sooo..... I don't know, I'll give it 2 weeks and give it a go then. Of course my monofin that I have been waiting for will arrive tomorrow making 2 weeks feel like 2 months!

Re: Blood Spit

I went down after a big mutton one time too quick and didn't equalize and that happened to me. Had a bunch of snot/blood come out in my mask, didn't know what it was at first, just that something blocked my view. LOL went up top to clean it out and saw it. I took it easy and did some shallow stuff, and it went away. Think it was just a blood vessel in my sinus area or something.

Re: Blood Spit

Don't rule out a lung squeeze, but like everyone else has said, take a break for a few days.

Re: Blood Spit

No offence, but I will rule out a lung squeeze. I would like to think that if I did have one I would know it.

I have done my fair share of exhale dives (25m) without a squeeze of lungs, but thanks for the idea.

This blood is either coming from my throat area or sinus. Either way it is my fault for overtraining them. So now I go back to the basics. Sailing my boat as often as possible and a little less gym training to let the body heal.

Just as the terminator once said, " I'll Be Back!"

So will I.

Re: Blood Spit

The thing is, IF it is an unhealed sinus squeeze trauma, there is not necessarily any pain. When I have one, I'll dive just as every time, everything feels fine and I can equalize just fine, but at some point, there will be blood from the nose. It only goes away after taking a complete break from diving for a few weeks...Of course, it could be something totally different, it just all sounds so very familliar

Re: Blood Spit

Mine was gone after a week. So just take a break and it'll go away.

Re: Blood Spit

It is exactly as you said Simo.

Today I could feel by pressing gently under my left eye a little soreness in the sinus cavity. I am almost positive this is the problem area.

I also recently started doing the neti pot thing. I really do not enjoy it that much and this sinus bleeding is a good reason for me to stop. Anyone want to buy a slightly used stainless netti pot?

I will take a break from diving for 2 weeks as you said, but I should still be able to to dry statics without further aggrivating the sinus tissue. Right?

Re: Blood Spit

Well, one week was about all I could handle being out of the water so today I went for a dive, just for fun, nothing deep, just like the good ole days. You know, before education

And no blood spit, hands free eqing, really good time, just like the good ole days. Oh yea and about 7lbs of fish to boot. Yummm....fish....finaly....

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,
Jay
