i wasn´t going to post this.....but information helps saves lives.. so here we go.
it was my birthday 6 of us boarded our speed boat called " dark side of the moon" and we headed off just after sunset to our favorite freediving area..... waited... for darkness and in we went, this place is full of amazing tunnels and caves. i had freedived this place many times before at night and in the day,..actually all of us had. This night it was a little darker than the rest. at one point during the session i lost mental awarness of where one of my friends was, Tom. I knew the rest of the guys where in a cave with an open top together chilling out looking up to the moon breaking through the clouds. Last thing i heard about where was Tom was that he went deep into a hole/tunnel. I decided to stay out side and wait for the glimpse of lights of there torches as they reappered. after a long while i saw Toms light, small, white, blue bright and deep. it wasn.t moving, i just thought he was chilling out checking the crabs on his way up.... so i went down to join him. i found him on his back like a dead spider, eyes closed mouth shut, i really thought he was playing with me. so i slapped him on his hand ... no reaction. he was like jelly... weight belt off and up we went. i could not believe what was happening. We surfaced and he was totally out, i shouted like crazy to the rest of my friends and in my disbelief and confusion removed his masked, hood, blowing like crazy into his eye balls and shouting his name. This is where my dearest friend Wolf took over and proceeded in squeezing the hell out of him to get the water out.... A Quick desicion and i was off for a long swim to get the boat. i got back there to the scene and thankyou so much lord he was alive..........they got him back (thank god Wolf you were there to bring him back) after a horrible very long time. standard procedure, nearest port, radio, ambulance. Tom says, he found no exit in the cave / tunnel. his dive computer said 18.3 meters 3minutes 44 seconds. he has water in his lungs and will be out of hospital tomorrow, and now he has two birthdays. He used up so much of his luck this night, every single milligram counted. he is a super fit healthy guy.. peace and love Johnny.

Thanks for sharing. I hope your friend Tom is ok.
It just goes to show that things can happen when we least expect it. There are some threads in the Safety section with similar stories. Well done for the rescue. You did very well to find him and get him to the surface. Dive safe Lucia

Well done and thanks for posting. It always seems to me that its the fun stuff like this that poses greater risk - we are so safety conscious when we are deep training and we just go out and play we feel invincible.... its hard, but keep alert, even when the game doesn't seem so serious.

This guy is so lucky... I hope he'll recover fast.
I hope one of the lessons tought was that you bunch should've been properly buddied up. One down and one up watching the other one. You had everything you needed for proper safety, you just didn't use it. |

Wolf, can you describe from your perspective the details of the rescue? Did Tom have a laryngospasm, how long did recovery take, what was employed for the recovery, any other notes of interest? It would be much appreciated, since this was quite the unique rescue there may be invaluable information. Thanks. Tyler |

look tyler
my english is not very good and all the information and knowledge: you will find on this enormous db-website where i got 90% of mine using the search function, as well as you can google heimlich manoever etc. which is a very good thing if there is water in the lung.. but nothing can beat the practice and safty drills and skills and the calmness in such a difficult situation ;-) promised sis felix wolf |

Wolf,
I think Tyler meant how were you thinking and what did you observe that made you take the desicion for doing the Heimlich manoever instead of mouth to mouth for example. By the way, all the freedivers here will be eternally indebt to you and Johnny for turning what could have been a tragedy into "simply" an experience, if one can put it in those terms. The loss of a friend would have been devastating, and you avoided that. |

you should have seen him,adrian
for me it was obvious that there was water in his lung and i couldn t feel a heart beat so i started pushing on his diaphram. after a while there was strange foam and noices coming up and out of his mouth and as well i open up myself to give him energy and scan him to not letting him go. then i could feel a smooth heart beat and more strange noices but i dont wonna repeat all the details of this. i think every situation needs its certain reaction and treatment and some stuff i just don t remember. lucky us, we were enough people to handel the situation. me alone no change after 5min i got tiered kicking the water f.e. but there was a float not far away which did a good job. gracias a todo wolf |
