The rope I mention is the only type available locally but it seems to be available everywhere (the sad state of Britain today, lots of shops selling the same products - probably from the same factory in China). It looks more like the one on the left. It was easy to splice a loop in each end. It might just be a personal preference thing, I'm used to the stiffer RA line & prefer that (or an even stiffer line) to reduce tangling.

Re: float lines

mr.x, you are very right. I am diving around reef(not coral) but mostly seaweed. Would a reel be the set up of choice for medium sized fish., also the buoys on the end of your lines, do you take them underwater with you, or do they just go through the kep at the top

Re: float lines

I prefer reels, but there are pros and cons for either choice. Check my posts in the CA/West Coast forum. The 27 pound yellowtail my buddy shot yesterday was with a reel, and the 62 pound white sea bass I shot a couple of weeks ago was with a reel.

If you use a float line, you have no choice but to take the floats under water with you. If you dive and go under kelp, the float line and whatever is on the end of it has to follow you. That's why you can't use more than a very small float like those in my photos.

BTW, when asking questions about spearguns and related equipment, its often valuable to ask them in the forum for the area in which you dive. While there are some general principles, what works in Wales or the Red Sea might not be exactly what would be best in the La Jolla kelp bed.

Re: float lines

You know I think float lines in general have their application, but they are not the Mode apparatus for all situations and truth be said when you drop and perhaps chase a fish you take your floatline down with you...OK true may just tangle less, OK may just hang up less, but in my experience I've seen little difference where we hunt in Miami b/t a float line and my weedwhacker line- it jumps off my spool, never tangles, its cheap, it cuts thru the water with zero drag...not to name one better than the other, but I've said it before and say it again different applications for different situations and a lot is based on what you are use to using and feel confidence using...my 2 cuban centavos
