Hi Jeffdreams
I have had the same thought about salt, but I don't know if it is correct. It would be nice to get one of the experts in freediving biochemistry, nutrition or other such (sorry, this is so much NOT my area, that I don't know which area it is) to comment on this. I have heard the advice "drink lots of water - stay hydrated" a lot, and I am wondering why noone mentions the importance of maintaining a salt balance as well. Like I said, I don't have any real knowledge about this, but my guess is that the muscles need the minerals from the salt... and you probably hit just the right balance between salt and water intake. So congratulations and keep us posted if you make other discoveries in this area Feel free to correct this |

Well, maintaining hydration with just water is not very easy, or even possible. It all pretty much comes straight through.
So yes, maintaining a good balance of salt and minerals, as well as hydration, is essential. Personally I don't see (over)hydration as a huge performance boost, but it does pretty much eliminate packing blackouts. But there is such a thing as too much hydration IMO, so balance, like in everything, is the key...

Salts are actually minerals. The most important aspect of being "hydrated" is having adequate minerals, particularly salts. Electrolytes are more or less salts. The best electrolyte solutions have a high percentage of Potassium (rather than Sodium like table salt).
I use a sports drink made by Twin Labs called Cytomax (google search) which is an excellent electrolyte source and has some other useful chemistry as well. It really does inhance your diving performance.... Lungfish |

hi lungfish is cytomax an energy drink, isotonic and all that and do you find beneficial for diving or just cardio training. i thought some of the energy drinks may raise the heart rate but not sure I,ve tried some for swimming but usually stick to water but should I be using something else ?
