Total noob here, so forgive me. I wanted to do some breath holds, dry, laying down to test out my max/train for a longer breath hold. I figure if you hold your breath long enough in water, swb can/will occur. I assume the same will happen when doing the exact same thing on dry land. My question is, if I hold my breath so long that I pass out (once again, dry), will I spontaneously begin breathing again? I don't need a spotter when doing dry runs, do I? I figure holding my breath until I pass out might be a good learning experience, I just don't want to die.
Thanks for the info! |

You`ll start breathing again. I would recommend laying on your back doing this. You`ll be relaxed and there is no risk of falling. Also, face down on your pillow is not a good option

strictly speaking,- any activity involving passing out can be life threatning! If you are lying on your back you could also risk swallowing your tongue. It is always a good idea to train with someone.
If you do want to train dry, you might try to sit reclined in a bed or a sofa, or enven lying in the recovery position,- although the lack of comfort there might be a distraction. cheers Martin |

The bad thing about holding your breath until you pass out- you won't know your accurate time. Just cause you'll start breathing again doesn't mean you'll "come to" That may take a few more seconds. Also, most people do longer breath holds in Water. But you should always have a safety for that - fo sho.
Doing 'tables' is a good way to increase your breath hold time. Which you can also increase without the risk of BO. I basically went from 1:45 before doing tables - to 3:04. Then I took a freediving class (FIT Level 2) and went up to 4:15 in 1 day. I think I could of gone longer too- But was not comfortable.

Hey, thanks for all the replies! So I guess the chance of death while passing out from a dry static is pretty minimal. Just wanted to make sure before I pushed myself too far!
